Abstract
The believer’s first commission is to the service of evangelism. The apostle Paul, writing also for the evangelist Timothy, appropriated the words of Psalm 116:10 to say “We too believe, and so we speak,” seeing in the testimony of the two of them to the Gospel a vehicle for the extension of divine grace and the inclusion of respondents into the community of those who give thanks and glory to God. Bishop V. S. Azariah of Dornakal told the meeting of the International Missionary Council at Tambaram in 1938 that when he toured the churches of his Anglican diocese, he would have the baptized members place their hands upon their heads and repeat the words of St. Paul at 1 Corinthians 9:16, “Woe unto me if I preach not the Gospel.” The sentiment was shared by Lesslie Newbigin and applied in the first instance to himself.
