Abstract Sylvester spent his first post-Woolwich year living in London and mobilizing his supporters in an effort to extract from the War Office the pension he had earned as a result of his fifteen years of service to the Royal Military Academy. After the LondonTimes carried a lead story on the mathematician’s case on 17 August, 1871 and following Sylvester’s own letters to the Times a week later and to the journal,Nature, also in 1871, the authorities finally capitulated, although they refused to award him the full amount he felt was his due.
