The Case Against Woman Zion

View through CrossRef
Abstract In Jeremiah’s divorce proceedings, Woman Zion is tried, found guilty, and punished for her crimes of adultery and idolatry. Once Yhwh’s isolated wilderness bride, she shirks her body’s right status and twists herself into a randy she-ass who sniffs the wind in search of suitors and plants her elbows upon every high hill. In response, these Zion Body Texts leverage two laws from Deuteronomy and Leviticus to justify divorce between Yhwh and Woman Zion. This innovative move adds a metaphorical layer to "historical" laws about the body, without subtracting any of the body’s potency. It is common in biblical studies to say that biblical texts historicize mythology, but these Zion Body Texts metaphorize history. As punishment for her crimes, Yhwh lifts Woman Zion’s skirts above her head and exposes her genitals, withdrawing his protection and absolving himself from responsibility toward his one-time covenant partner.
