Abstract
Chapter Four falls into two parts. The first part investigates Agrippa’s treatment by Augustus on receiving the toga of manhood. Agrippa received none of the prizes offered to his elder brothers. Gaius and Lucius Caesar were both named Prince of the Youth and furnished with special privileges, and had been, more importantly, designated consuls at the age of fourteen. It is argued that Agrippa’s treatment depended upon the influence of Tiberius. The second part of the chapter treats Agrippa’s abdicatio in ad 6. A new interpretation of abdicatio is offered. It was a form of punishment that did not involve emancipation of the child, but was more akin to being grounded without pocket money. Augustus chose abdicatio because it left Agrippa under his control (patria potestas).
