Social Work and Policing

Policing, like social work, is a complex term with multiple meanings. Focusing on the unique context of the United States, this article provides an overview of policing, police and social work, and policing in social work historically and contemporarily. The first part of the article traces the historical arc of policing and social work and the relationship between the two. The second part of the article drills into 21st century problems in policing, social work’s response, and dilemmas that social work, as a profession, must grapple with to determine its desired relationship to police and policing.
