Porträt Colley Cibber (1671-1757)

View through Europeana Collections
Portrait of Colley Cibber. The British poet is turned to the left on this leaf as a chest in the three-quarter profile, the head turned slightly to the right. His eyes are directed head-on to the viewer. He wears wig, shirt and a coat. His armchair is visible in the background. The image is surrounded by a rectangular frame that rests on a small postament. In addition to the inscription, a small flower thread, on it a notebook with feather adorn the postament, as a sign for the vocation of the depicted. Cibber was also an actor for comic roles and manager of the Theatre Royal on Drury Lane in London. His plays were performed by his own theater company at the Theatre Royal. This paper seems to be a combination of two techniques, the puncture with etching. The British Museum has the same leaf in its collection. Signature: Vanloo pinx. Hopwood sculp.
