FIGURE. Hovdam Standing, backward inclined with the head slightly turned. Clothed foot-side outer rock adorned with thistles, lining in red and gold. The inner coat with green crosses against the gold bottom, the upper part with flowers against the red bottom. Figurines of this kind were manufactured for export only. They depict geishas, female hostesses who mastered Japanese art forms such as classical music, dance, play and conversation, mainly to entertain male customers. They play musical instruments (some are missing) and swing in dance. Porcelain figurines of ladies in underglaze blue with overglaze enamels and gilding Japan, Arita kilns, c.1700.
