A Thing in Disguise: The Visionary Life of Joseph Paxton

This chapter turns to the biography of Joseph Paxton in A Thing in Disguise: The Visionary Life of Joseph Paxton (2003), by Kate Colquhoun. Paxton was a farm labourer's son who went on to work at the Horticultural Society's gardens in Chiswick. These were boom times in gardening. Since the eighteenth-century voyages of exploration, hundreds of plant species had been pouring into Britain. Paxton was eventually appointed head gardener at Chatsworth, one of the grandest estates in the realm. Along with Paxton's many achievements, the chapter also explores his friendship with his employer, George Spencer Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire. Together, both men went on to innovate the horticultural field. Paxton, in addition, also made many architectural achievements.
