Cultural studies and intervention in television policy

This article discusses the relationship between cultural studies theorizing of television and more practical engagement with television policy. It demonstrates to what extent seminal cultural studies contributions to television theory from the 1970s were linked to policy institutions and issues, and argues that such ties were lost during the 1980s, resulting in a situation where cultural studies scholars tend to throw their hands in the air when faced with concrete and important questions of policy.
