The dice under the cross

View through Europeana Collections
Lithography by Max Beckmann from 1911. Leaf 5 of the episode “Six Lithographies to the New Testament.” In the background, four muscular men sitting on the ground and rolling - the three dice lie between them on the ground. A fourth man stands to the right behind them, also looking towards the dice, supported by a staff. He wears a Harnish with short sleeves. Two crucified people behind the left: one front to the observer, cut from the edge of the picture to the left and top and the group of dice. Dressed only with a loincloth, the head thrown into the neck. A second behind it suggests in the profile. In the background, the silhouettes of several people. The sky is darkened. Signed under picture on the right with “Beckmann.”
