PYTHOID ‘HOLOW-BOTOMED’ AMPHORAE FROM PHANA GORIA

View through CrossRef
The paper reviews finds of amphorae from an unidentified Mediterranean center (Northern Agais) of the first half of the 5th century BC from Phanagoria. The context of their discovery is related, in particular, to the layers of destructed buildings both on the lower and the upper plateaus of the city site. In both cases this destruction was accompanied by fires, the layers also have yielded weapons. Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that in the first half of the 5th century BC Phanagoria was completely () destroyed. However, during this period the buildings in the Upper City were destroyed twice: ca. 480 BC and close to the mid5th century BC. That is why, it is not possible to define exactly when the buildings in the lower plateau were destroyed (later the so called temple in antis was constructed over the ruins). Indirect data make the author accept an earlier date when the city defensive constructions were destroyed.
