Introduction

This introduction sets out the importance of plants to the societies and cultures of the American Tropics as well as the interconnectedness of the histories and trajectories of plants and people across the region. It examines how in the American tropics, plants have been fundamental to ecological and cultural shifts and enmeshed in circuits of power and resistance, especially by Indigenous people. Post-Conquest, it argues, plants have—and continue to be—regarded first and foremost as commodities and sources of exportable wealth.
