“ Hector Killer of Men” or “ Hector Tamer of Horses” : Formulaic Artistry and Narrative in the Iliad.
The coexistence of Ἕκτορος ἀνδροφόνοιο / Ἕκτορος ἱπποδάμοιο, two equivalent formulas, is generally considered as a breach in the economy of the formulaic system. The study of the two epithets’ distribution within the Iliad reveals their role in the characterization of Hector and the narrative function of the pair they are forming, for it is closely linked to the evolution of Hector’s and Achilles’ relationship.
