#MeToo and Everyday Sexism in Bangladesh

Abstract
Almost five years after the #MeToo allegation against Harvey Weinstein, this chapter looks back from a feminist point of view to understand the #MeToo situation in Bangladesh. Based on seven in-depth interviews with #MeToo survivors and a journalist, the chapter brings together personal experiences of and responses to #MeToo in the complex sociopolitical, cultural, and feminist context in Bangladesh. Instead of providing a concrete answer on the success or failure of #MeToo in Bangladesh, the chapter rather suggests that although progress is slow, and not many of the offenders were punished or socially ostracized, #MeToo has been successful in leaving a strong message against everyday sexism. #MeToo, from a spark of individual movement, has now transformed to a countrywide movement against sexual violence. Thus, in a non-Western, non-white country like Bangladesh, #MeToo worked through revision rather than replication.
