Fairfield, Govan: Shipbuilding and the Scottish Nation
View through CrossRef
Deindustrialisation threatened the employment culture of Clydeside shipbuilding workers, who valued their earnings and craft skill along with autonomy from managerial supervision and employer control. The Fairfield shipyard in Govan was host to a series of industrial crises, which strengthened working-class moral economy feeling on the Clyde, and the expectation that trade-union organisation and state intervention could advance economic security. The 1965-68 Fairfield ‘Experiment’ and the Labour government’s 1969 investment in Upper Clyde Shipbuilders fed the moral-economy basis of the victorious 1971-72 work-in. This preserved mass employment in shipbuilding, promoted popular support for Home Rule, and inspired other occupational groups in the long age of deindustrialisation to fight for their right to work.
