Epiretinal Membrane Surgery on Youtube

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the usefulness of YouTube videos on epiretinal membrane surgery in the retina. Methods: When ‘epiretinal membrane surgery’ was searched on the YouTube search engine, the first 100 videos on this topic were evaluated. These videos were then analyzed and scored using DISCERN, Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), and Global Quality (GQ) scoring systems. Results: The evaluated videos had a DISCERN score of 30.0 ± 7.8, a JAMA score of 1.5 ± 0.6, and a GQ score of 1.8 ± 0.6. When the results of epiretinal membrane surgery were evaluated according to the quality scoring of these three scoring systems, the DISCERN score was evaluated as poor, the JAMA score as low quality, and the GQ scored as poor quality. Conclusion: Although there are many videos about epiretinal membrane surgery on Youtube, the usefulness of these videos as a resource is low and the quality is poor.
