Taking Notes in the School of Didymus the Blind

View through CrossRef
This chapter explores the shortcomings of classical education, such as rigid rules, reliance on authoritative texts, and a narrow curriculum, which stifled creativity and individual thinking. Despite these flaws, classical education provided rigorous training, a deep admiration for ancient texts, and rhetorical excellence. The chapter reviews Stenger's recent work highlighting the dynamism and innovations within late antique education, particularly the educational theories of Christian thinkers like Didymus the Blind. Didymus, a renowned Christian teacher, integrated classical paideia with Christian teachings, addressing students of various levels and subjects, including grammar, rhetoric, philosophy, and numerology. The chapter discusses the role of marginalia, notes, and the potential involvement of stenographers in recording lectures, emphasizing the spontaneous and oral nature of these texts.
