painting (oil): "Sunset 1956"

View through Europeana Collections
"it is perhaps inevitable that our contemporary acquisitions [in 1958-59] should be dominated by the large, romantic, near-monochrome landscape, "Sunset, 1956" by Alan Reynolds, a young man only just on the wrong side of thirty who in so short a time has achieved that much envied thing, an 'established reputation,' and representation in the leading galleries, including those of Paris (Palais de Luxembourg), London (the Tate), Manchester and Australia. The landscape is not an actual view, but synthetised memories of such, fused into a mood dominated by wonder, if not awe, and painted by an artist who has perfectly reconciled means and objective."
