Woven shawl with a ground of silk and wool, probably made in Paisley, Scotland, 1825-1830. Woven shawl with a ground of white silk and wool. With a pattern of decked-edged stripes alternately red, containing a stem of small blue flowers, and parti-coloured red, brown, green and blue containing sprigs of blue or red flowers. The colours are separated by a twisting leaf with floral filling. From these stripes spring short stems of tiny blue flowers with red and yellow markings which almost hide the white ground. Applied borders are just under five inches wide and include a narrow inner guard-stripe with a floral meander on white and a slight wider outer guard with two types of 'cone' on dark blue. The main border has small cones and flowers on a compartmented ground in contrasting colours - red, lemon, yellow, blue and green. The compartments are delineated by curving stems and leaves. The borders are woven on a red silk warp. Ground 2 x 2 twill, pattern 3/1 twill. Woven wool and silk.
