Aerogels and Their Composites for Sensing Applications

Aerogels have garnered significant attention in recent years owing to their unique properties, such as ultra-low density, high surface area, and excellent thermal insulation. These characteristics make aerogels promising candidates for various applications, including sensing. This work presents a comprehensive review of aerogels and their composites utilized in sensing applications. We discuss the synthesis methods of aerogels and their functionalization techniques to tailor their sensing properties. Recent advancements in the development of aerogel-based sensors for detecting various analytes are also discussed. Overall, aerogels and their composites hold great potential for advancing sensing technologies in diverse fields ranging from environmental monitoring to biomedical diagnostics.
