This is a study of the notion of space as seen through the terminology in use among the Mongols. The terms are classified into three main oppositions symbolizing directions : VERTICALITY (UP/DOWN), PERSPECTIVITY (FRONT/BACK) and LATERALITY (RIGHT/LEFT). The combination of the two first oppositions brings forth a secondary opposition : DECLIVITY (UPSTREAM/DOWNSTREAM), and the union of PERSPECTIVITY and LATERALITY expresses ORIENTATION according to the four cardinal points. Two other oppositions, DISTANCE (NEAR/FAR) and DELIMITATION (INSIDE/ OUTSIDE), are used to locate places in space. All of them can be modified by a cross-classifying opposition : MOTION (STATIC/DYNAMIC).
Most of the items are used not only in the spatial sphere, but also in other semantic fields : time, relationships, hierarchies and values, and metaphorical uses. For instance, "superiority" can be conveyed by the terms дээр, θθд, баруун, with slight differences in meaning : quality, achievement, position.
