Willem Elsschot staat weer volop in de belangstelling. Naast zijn literaire kwaliteiten wordt ook zijn politieke overtuiging onder de loep genomen want ze beïnvloedde in niet geringe mate zijn romans. Dat Elsschot niet bang was om zich met zijn werk te mengen in politiek geladen discussies was bekend. Zeker sinds zijn Bormsgedicht na de executie van August Borms in de naoorlogse jaren zorgde voor ophef. Vele lezers vroegen zich af hoe de schrijver zich kon identificeren met een uithangbord van het met de nationaal-socialistische bezetter collaborerende Vlaams-nationalisme. Er zijn daarnaast overigens nog meer gegevens en getuigenissen die wijzen op een positieve ingesteldheid ten aanzien van het radicale, compromisloze Vlaams-nationalisme. Zo is er ook een tekst overgeleverd uit 1952 die erg positief klinkt over Cyriel verschaeve die door Elsschot een "onverzettelijke Vlaming die voor niemand, ook niet voor de machtigsten, zijn nederige pastoorshoed heeft afgenomen" wordt genoemd. Van enige kritische ingesteldheid is geen sprake. Het origineel bleef jarenlang verborgen waardoor het moeilijk was deze brief ten volle in de Elsschot-studie te betrekken. Many readers wondered how the author could identify with an icon of Flemish nationalism who collaborated with the national-socialist occupier. In fact, there are additional data and testimonies that indicate his positive attitude towards radical uncompromising Flemish nationalism. For instance, there is a text handed down from 1952, which appears to be very positive about Cyriel Verschaeve, and whom Elsschot calls “an uncompromising Fleming who did not take off his humble pastor’s hat for anyone, not even the most powerful.” There is no question of any critical attitude. The original text remained hidden for many years, which made it difficult to relate this letter completely to the Elsschot study. This problem has now been solved by this edition of source material.
