VOYAGES OF DISCOVERY: HUGH SAY ALIAS JOHN DAY THE MEN OF BRISTOL AND JOAO FERNANDES
View through CrossRef
In the first part of the paper the author explains to the readers the story of the so-called John Day's letter, and informs them about a very valuable contribution to the history of discoveries by Dr. A. Ruddock, who, after prolonged research identified the mysterious John Day as an important English merchant, Hugh Say. In the second part, the author discusses the hypotheses of Dr. Ruddock concerning the achievement of the "men of Bristol" and the landfall of John Cabot, and presents his own views on these problems. The third part of the paper supports the hypothesis that the man who, in the auhor's opinion, visited the Canadian shores in about 1494 was the same person who later was the pilot of John Cabot's ship in 1497, and who is popularly known as "the Lavrador"—namely Joao Fernandes, Portuguese merchant and sailor of Terceira Island, Azores.
