High Standards

Abstract
Imagine a person saying in traffic court, “Your Honor, ideally we would not need to drive defensively. Admittedly, my driving looks incompetent in this world, but that’s because my standards are too high. The world isn’t ready for them.” A judge might respond, “Sir, the existence of drivers like you is precisely the reason why this world’s ideal is to drive defensively.” The point is that utopians worry that realists make concessions to the reality of the human condition that are premature when the task is to articulate ideals. This worry is misguided. People need higher standards for what to call a high standard.
