Hercules torching gold wool

View through Europeana Collections
overall: The work presents Hercule torcind the golden wool, while it was found in the captivity of Queen Omphale. At the behest of the oracle of Delphi Hercule had to serve Omphale, Queen of Lydia, as a punishment for killing Iphitos. To prove his blind submission and his love of Omphale, whose husband has become, Hercule does the most humble work. Belonging to the series of works with subjects from Hercule’s works, created by the Italian artists in the seventeenth to eighteenth centuries, the work illustrates an iconographic theme inspired by Apollodoros, II, 6, 3. The foreground recording of Hercule’s figure with a massive body, draped summary, directing light in such a way as to relieve the athletic musculature of the character, are characteristics that emphasize the manner of Michele Desubleo.
