Cette contribution étudie Edward Hopper sous l’angle de sa réception. Elle s’attache à montrer comment, entre les années 1920 et 1980, la critique populaire (mais aussi savante) a construit l’admiration pour un personnage « Edward Hopper ». Celle-ci s’est organisée petit à petit autour d’une américanité ambiguë, hésitant entre affirmation d’un nationalisme masculin et yankee, et la perception d’une aliénation moderniste. L’auteur suggère que c’est une ambivalence esthétique et politique de Hopper qui a permis à ses critiques de construire cette fiction du peintre, aujourd’hui communément admise. Seule une ré-historisation de la critique (populaire et savante) permet de saisir cette construction d’une icône que ne permet pas de comprendre une analyse strictement internaliste de l’œuvre.
