Artykuł zawiera analizę okoliczności, w jakich Waldemar Pawlak został premierem rządu koalicyjnego Sojuszu Lewicy Demokratycznej i Polskiego Stronnictwa Ludowego (SLD-PSL). Omówione zostały najważniejsze konflikty wewnątrz koalicji oraz rola, jaką odgrywał w nich premier Pawlak. Odtworzono też jego rywalizację z liderem SLD Aleksandrem Kwaśniewskim. Analiza relacji premiera Pawlaka z Lechem Wałęsą pozwoliła na wyjaśnienie okoliczności utraty poparcia ze strony prezydenta, co przesądziło o dymisji szefa rządu.
