A GHAZAL NOT INCLUDED IN THE DIVAN OF MUHIBBI AND TAHMIS BY ŞEMSI TO THIS GHAZAL
View through CrossRef
In classical Turkish literature, there are poems which are not included in the divans of poets, for various reasons. Mecmuas/collections of these poems, and poets not having a divan, are important resources. It is possible to find unknown poems or poets in some archival documents, in addition to collections. One of the aforementioned archive materials is registered in file number 324 and folder number 27 in the sources of Ottoman Archives at Topkapi Palace Museum MA.e, the Directorate of State Archives. The document includes 41 ghazals (lyric poems, a form with its roots in seventh-century Arabia that is composed of five to fifteen structurally and thematically autonomous couplets), 1 tahmis/making five, 4 stanzas/quatrains and 1 distich/couplet written by 8 poets. This document containing 18 ghazals of Muhibbî and nazires (imitation, interpretation, reply in kind) written after his poems has some parallels with the nazire mecmua/imitation collection edited by Mehmed Izzî, probably in the 16th century.
There exist 13 imitations written by Bâkî to Sultan Suleiman in the document authenticating the collection organized by Mehmed Izzî and including unknown poems of the poets such as Dâʻî, Khalîl, and Şemsî. The document also includes a imitation competition reported by Gubârî. What makes the document the relevant to this study is that it includes a poem not included in the Divan of Sultan Suleiman published by both Ak and Yavuz, and a tahmis written on his poem by a poet with the pseudonym Şemsî. In this study, firstly it was examined whether the poem in question is by Sultan Suleiman or not, later examining if this tahmis might belonged to which Şemsî. As a result of the study, it is clear that the poem belongs to Muhibbî, and İsfendiyarzâde Ahmed Şemsî (Shemsî) Paşa (Pasha) -one of the 16th century poets- has made a tahmis to this lyric poem.
