By Gerasimos Sinaitos Filipupolitu Icon 34 x 47 cm 16th Century A portrayal of Mount Sinai in Egypt, depicting in illustrations the key biblical and spiritual events relating to it such as Moses seeing a bush alight that wouldn’t burn (representing the Blessed Virgin Mary), Moses receiving the ten commandments, the monastery of Saint Catherine that is located on the mountain and the Saint herself whose relics where found on the mountain where the monastery was built in her name. The icon was painted by Gerasimos of Sinaitis who during the second half of the 13th century went to Sina where he met Saint Gerasimo the Sinaitis (meaning the man of mount Sina) of whom he became a pupil and was given the name ‘Of Sinaitis’, referring to his mentor.
