Alfred Margul-Sperber stammt aus der Bukowina, dem Buchenland, jener Region am östlichen Rand der einstigen Donaumonarchie und damit am Rand jener Gebiete, in denen mehrere Sprachen und Kulturen zusammentrafen und einen kulturellen Austausch ermöglichten. Die Rolle des literarischen Mentors, die in Prag Max Brod zufiel, übernahm in der Bukowina Alfred Margul-Sperber, der sich neben eigenen Veröffentlichungen und Übersetzungen vor allem durch die Förderung junger Talente hervortat.
