Abstract
This study presents the Braila after 1829. Article 5 of the Pace treaty of Adrianople stated that the Romanian Principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia will enjoy free foreign trade, and special additional act added that the two principalities will be no longer submitted to Ottoman requisitions. The sums necessary for modernizations were obtained from economic activities, more numerous and important, and the agricultural exports played the primary role. Lots of people were attracted in the prosperous town, from businessmen to simple sailors in the port, Romanians and foreigners. The status of franc port that Braila had for half a century contributes to the demographic evolutions. Out of the big cities of Romania, Braila had the highest proportions regarding the people rise.
