La cartographie, serpent de mer de l'ethnologie européenne

Résumé Consacré aux usages de la cartographie en ethnologie ? plus particulièrement en ethnologie européenne ?, cet article évoque d?abord quelques aspects historiques propres à éclairer les contextes spécifiques dans lesquels la « méthode cartographique » a été utilisée ou, au contraire, délaissée comme outil heuristique par les ethnologues. Il présente ensuite certains problèmes méthodologiques et théoriques, notamment les difficultés épistémologiques rencontrées par l'« ethno-cartographie », telle qu?elle a été pratiquée en Europe au cours du xx e siècle. Enfin, sont évoquées quelques réflexions sur l'usage géopolitique et idéologique des cartes ethnographiques.
