Beta‐Lactamase Tests

Abstract
Beta‐lactamases are important mediators of bacterial resistance to beta‐lactam agents. The beta‐lactamase tests detect penicillinases where detection predicts resistance to the penicillinase‐labile penicillins. Routine beta‐lactamase tests are performed directly from bacterial colonies and are based on visual detection of the end products of beta‐lactamase hydrolysis, demonstrated with a colorimetric reaction. Direct beta‐lactamase testing can be performed on Gram‐negative and Grampositive anaerobes other than the
Bacteroides fragilis
group, as organisms in the
B. fragilis
group are beta‐lactamase producers and predictably resistant to penicillin, amoxicillin, and ampicillin. For direct beta‐lactamase tests, coagulase‐negative staphylococci may require induction to demonstrate a positive beta‐lactamase reaction.
