A Remark on the Perception of Tentativeness in Science

View through CrossRef
Empirical data mainly referring to populations of students or teachers suggest that the idea of “proven” scientific laws and theories is a widespread misconception. With reference to a thought experiment, it is argued that this misconception is just as unacceptable as the flat earth hypothesis and other pre-scientific world views. To improve the situation, a sensible approach is required which emphasizes the reliability of science. As a part of this effort, more data should be acquired on the extent to which the misconception is prevalent in the general public.
