La Meri

This essay examines the work of La Meri (Russell Meriwether Hughes, 1898–1988), a concert dance artist, teacher, and researcher who studied, performed, taught, and wrote about the dance traditions of an international array of cultures and specialized in what she termed “ethnic dance.”
