Effects of Waste Management Practices on the Performance of Building Construction Firms in Lagos State, Nigeria

The construction industry faces waste management issues which lead to cost overrun, adverse environmental and human health effect, heightened operational costs, reduced profitability, and diminished competitiveness. This study aims to investigate the effect of waste management practices on the performance of building construction firms in Lagos State, Nigeria. A descriptive survey research design was employed, targeting 345 construction professionals from 69 registered firms under the Federation of Construction Industry (FOCI) in Lagos State. Using Yamane’s formula, a sample size of 185 was determined, the selection of the participants was based on purposive sampling and random sampling technique. The data collected were analysed using regression analysis. Findings revealed that waste management practices (waste reduction, waste re-use, and waste recycling) have significant positive effects on performance of building construction firms. The study concludes that effective waste management practices contribute positively to the performance of building construction firms in Lagos State. Hence, this study recommends that building construction firms should prioritize waste reduction through sustainable construction practices, resource optimization, and staff training. Also, firms are encouraged to integrate re-use strategies at the project planning stage and collaborate with stakeholders to source reusable materials.
