Telepharmacy models improving chronic disease management in underserved, remote communities
View through CrossRef
This paper explores the potential of telepharmacy models in enhancing chronic disease management within underserved, remote communities. Telepharmacy, defined as the provision of pharmaceutical care through telecommunications technology, emerges as a viable solution to the challenges faced by these communities, including limited access to healthcare services and medications. By examining various telepharmacy models—synchronous, asynchronous, and hybrid—this study highlights their benefits, such as improved medication access, enhanced patient adherence, cost-effectiveness, and reduced healthcare disparities. However, the implementation of telepharmacy is fraught with challenges, including technological barriers, regulatory and legal considerations, privacy and security concerns, and resource constraints. The paper concludes with targeted recommendations for policymakers, healthcare providers, and communities to overcome these obstacles and fully leverage telepharmacy's potential. With strategic investments and collaborative efforts, telepharmacy can revolutionize chronic disease management, ensuring equitable and efficient healthcare delivery to underserved populations.
