Skulptur.Pierre Corneille

SCULPTURE. By biskvi. The French playwright Pierre Corneille (1606-1684) sits in a county court writing a poem. In his hand, he holds a few sheets of paper, reading the titles of some of his works; Le Cid. Horace, Cinna and Polyceute and others On the obscure carved plate: FAIT PAR J CAFFIERE EN 1779. Modeled after Jean Jacques Caffieri’s original sculpture from 1779. The order of this sculpture dates from 1778 and the marble statue, which is on the Louvre in our days, was exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1779. In the museum in Rouen, the author’s birthplace, there is also a specimen in natural terracotta and his most famous plays are mentioned there by title. The clay sculpture on a smaller scale, made in Sèvres, was paid to Caffiéri on 6 April 1784 and the sculpture of Molière on 22 January 1785 (2). Most likely due to lack of space on the narrowed model, the inscriptions on the pedestal of the Corneille sculpture were slightly shortened. The many cracks after the burning and Le Riche’s stamp actually make it a 1700s copy. It is the only existing specimen. When he possibly felt encouraged by this cooperation, in 1788 Caffiéri offered the factory in Sèvre’s models and plaster shapes to two statuette groups: The friendship surprised by Amor and Amor defeats everything.
