Drawing, 1964
View through Europeana Collections
Niki Kanagini's early artworks are characterized by a strongly abstract element that reflects the artist's efforts and reflections on the principles of modernism. Her interest in the early 1960s in clothing, fabric and its qualities turned her towards the tapestry technique. Her series of drawings in the collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art, dating from the mid-1960s, testifies to the artist's influences on weaving and the plastic qualities it carries, while at the same time allowing the element of rhythm, repetition, gesture and the intensity of black on white to shine through.
