A principal reflexão que o artigo se propõe a fazer é em relação à construção, a partir dosanos 60 no Brasil, do mito da Casa Própria e o papel das políticas habitacionais e da mídianessa construção. Nesse contexto, serão abordadas principalmente as problemáticasdos projetos desenvolvidos durante o período conhecido como BNH (Banco Nacional da Habitação), iniciado em 1964. Em contraposição, serão apresentadas alternativas em relação ao modelo BNH – principalmente as cooperativas habitacionais uruguaias -, e também, alternativas à Casa Própria no contexto de políticas habitacionais.Palavras-chave: BNH, Festival da Casa Própria, ooperativas habitacionais uruguaias.
