Concordance of Manufacturing Industries Using NIC-2008 and NIC-2004: A Disaggregate Level Study

View through CrossRef
Abstract The purpose of the study is to build a systematic correspondence of industries at the 4-digit and 5-digit levels using the National Industrial Classification (NIC) of 2008 and 2004, published by the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO), Government of India. Since the introduction of NIC-2008, data compilation of industries at the disaggregated level with an earlier version of NIC has become an extremely difficult and complex task as there is a lack of one-to-one correspondence between several 4-digit industrial codes. To mitigate this, the current study uses the product-wise distribution of industries reported in the NIC catalogue and matches similar industry codes at the 5-digit level. This enabled us to develop the correspondence of 116 industries at the 4-digit level, which is the product of matching 517 sub-class categories at the 5-digit level. Thus, the matching by us is a major refinement of the official correspondence table published by the CSO. Although several issues remain, we hope our concordance table will serve as a valuable reference guide for researchers and policymakers who wish to study and explore the empirical aspects of Indian manufacturing using disaggregated industry-level data.
