For the purpose of this review, the 14 series of charts used in air navigation in Canada are dealt with in four groups. For instrument air navigation the pilot has at his disposal the Enroute High Altitude Chart, the Enroute Low Altitude Chart, and the Terminal Air Chart, all of which are revised and distributed to subscribers every 35 days, and the Instrument Approach and Landing Chart, amendments to which are issued every 14 days. For visual air navigation there are available the 1:1,000,000 World Aeronautical Chart and the 1:1,000,000 Aeronautical Route Chart, for use by medium-speed, medium-range aircraft; the 1:500,000 Pilotage Chart, for use by slow-speed, short-range aircraft and for search and rescue; and the new series of 1:500,000 Low Level Pilotage Charts, for use by the RCAF in low-level, high-speed tactical air missions. The third group consists of several series of Plotting Charts, for recording the course of the aircraft on long-range flights, and the fourth is made up of special-purpose charts such as the Aerodrome Obstruction Chart and the Airport and Area Surveillance Chart.
