Walter Besant and James Rice

View through CrossRef
Chapter 1 tracks how, in the ten years of their partnership (1872–82), Walter Besant and James Rice made collaboration one of the literary fashions of the time. After his partner’s death, Besant went on successfully writing on his own, but he was still seen as the master of the art of collaboration. The chapter explores his controversial ideas on the subject; it then proceeds to analyse the model of co-authorship he proposed in his influential 1892 essay “On Literary Collaboration” and the debate it sparked in the periodical press. Since Besant’s essay was a direct reaction to “The Art and Mystery of Collaboration” by James Brander Matthews, the two works are discussed together. Finally, Chapter 1 unpacks Besant’s opinions on fiction writing and the profession of letters and highlights his leading role in the recognition of the economic rights of authors.
