Navigating Market Volatility: A Qualitative Exploration of Price Fluctuations and Coping Strategies among Vegetable Sellers in Sokoto Metropolis

This qualitative study explores the experiences and coping strategies of vegetable sellers in Sokoto Metropolis in managing the challenges posed by price fluctuations. Using semi-structured interviews, data were collected from 30 key informant interviewees across Sokoto North, Sokoto South, Wamakko, and Dange Shuni. Focus group discussions were conducted also among (20) participant from the four local governments that constitute Sokoto metropolis. The findings highlight the multifaceted impact of price volatility on sellers, including financial instability, reduced profit margins, and challenges in maintaining customer loyalty. Participants shared strategies such as engaging in informal credit systems, forming cooperatives, and leveraging community support to mitigate losses. The study also emphasizes the need for government intervention through infrastructure development, market regulation, and capacity-building programs for sellers. These insights shed light on the socio-economic dynamics of vegetable trading in developing economies and offer practical recommendations for fostering resilience in the face of market uncertainties.
