Tarquins de Rome et idéologie indo-européenne : (I) Tarquin l'Ancien et le dieu Vulcain

La tradition romaine rapporte que le roi Tarquin l'Ancien aurait vaincu les Sabins grâce à du bois enflammé jeté dans la rivière et aurait ensuite fait une offrande au dieu Vulcain pour cette victoire. Cet étrange récit semble offrir un exemple du thème indo-européen du « feu dans l'eau » et confirmer l'analyse proposée par G. Dumézil du dieu du feu Vulcain comme étant lié à de la deuxième fonction indoeuropéenne. L'épisode paraît s'insérer comme élément de deuxième fonction dans une série de trois guerres et de trois triomphes attribués à ce roi.
