Anatomizing an Insurrection: Sean O'Casey's The Plough and the Stars
View through CrossRef
Set in the slums of Dublin before and during the Easter Rebellion of 1916, Sean O'Casey's The Plough and the Stars dramatizes a world descending into chaos. What has not been accomplished by poverty is achieved by the insurrection: the immediate dangers of battle accelerate the physical and spiritual decay inherent in tenement life. O'Casey takes the view in The Plough that the Nationalists, by shooting at the people and by provoking the shelling and occupation of Dublin by the British, are responsible for turning the difficulties of slum existence into impossibilities.
