This chapter provides an overview of local anaesthetics (classification, mechanism of action, physiochemical characteristics, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics). It gives a detailed description of commonly used local anaesthetics in pain management, including Ametop®, Emla®, lidocaine, bupivacaine, and cocaine. It also discusses the use of mexiletine in chronic pain. Finally, this chapter describes the presentation and management of local anaesthetic toxicity.
