‘I Think I Still Qualify as a Slacker … Just One that’s Currently Lucky’: The Myths of Slacker , Austin, and Richard Linklater

View through CrossRef
Richard Linklater’s career, with consistent contributions to the Texas film community, continued involvement in local production and his stewardship if the Austin Film Society is often held as exemplary of efforts made to build a thriving regional film centre in Austin. This chapter explores the production and distribution of Linklater’s Slacker (1990) as well as its impact on and relationship to Austin’s development as a city and film community. It analyses Slacker in relation to its reputation as the quintessential Austin film and ‘Keep Austin Weird’ city ethos and the way Linklater is framed as the flashpoint to link the slacker with neoliberal economic development encased in myths of nostalgia and independence.
