Richard Linklater’s Humanism: Moral Primacy, Recency Effects, and SubUrbia

View through CrossRef
This chapter describes some of the formal strategies used in Richard Linklater’s feature films to prompt generous and counter-moralistic thinking about his characters. It offers a close reading of SubUrbia (1996) focusing on their interventionist depictions of youth in middle America, and narrative means for prompting a reflective reconsideration of the emotional life and contextual challenges of seemingly peripheral characters within an ensemble cast. This primary case study is then compared to a number of other Linklater titles that employ similar techniques, in particular School of Rock (2003), Fast Food Nation (2006), Me and Orson Welles (2008) and Bernie (2011).
