How to End up Imprisoned

In Chapter 3 I consider how to end up imprisoned in early Mesopotamia. To do so, I discuss the so-called law codes of ancient Mesopotamia. This is followed by a discussion of the ways in which justice was administered in everyday life. The overall approach involved retributive and restitutive actions. While imprisonment was not the normal response to “crimes,” I discuss the attested infractions that led to imprisonment of one sort or another. The numerous ways by which a person could be imprisoned points to the multifunctional nature of prisons. This is expected as ancient Near Eastern space was typically multifunctional. Nevertheless, functionality is kept in view.
